Definition

The S&P BSE Sensex (Sensitive Index) is the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), tracking 30 of India's largest and most actively traded companies. It is India's oldest stock market index, launched in 1986.

Example

When headlines say 'the market rose 400 points', they usually mean the Sensex or Nifty moved up.
